Rest as Sovereignty

It sounds revolutionary until you're actually faced with the choice. Then it just sounds impossible.

There are mornings when I don't know if I'm up for a hike until I start moving. The body check-in becomes a form of negotiation—stretching, warming up, gauging where the pain sits and whether it's the kind I can work with or the kind that demands I listen.

This isn't about admitting defeat. It's about accurately assessing what my body is telling me, because that information determines what sovereignty looks like today. Sometimes it means pushing through manageable discomfort. Sometimes it means recognizing that rest is the most powerful choice I can make.

The Decision to Rest

The hardest part isn't the physical limitation—it's overriding the voice that translates rest as failure. For decades, my worth was tied to productivity, to pushing through, to never letting my body's needs determine my choices. Rest felt like giving up.

But rest is different now. It's an active choice for long-term sustainability, not defeat. It's listening to your body's wisdom and making decisions based on awareness rather than shame. When I choose rest, I'm not giving up—I'm recalibrating.

Even on the days I don't hike, there's purpose in that choice. It means giving myself permission to be present with what's real, not what I wish it could be. That's not easy. It's a practice of releasing the need for performance, knowing that rest keeps me in the game for the long run.

The sovereignty isn't in always pushing forward. It's in claiming the agency to choose—movement or stillness, challenge or recovery—based on what serves your actual needs rather than old ideas about worth and productivity.
