Rest as Sovereignty

It sounds revolutionary until you're actually faced with the choice. Then it just sounds impossible.

There are mornings when I don't know if I'm up for a hike until I start moving. The check-in becomes a negotiation. Stretching, warming up, gauging where the pain lives. Whether I can work with it or that demands I listen.

This isn't about admitting defeat. It's about accurately assessing what my body is telling me, because it determines what today looks like. Sometimes pushing past discomfort. Sometimes recognizing rest is the most powerful choice I can make.

The Decision to Rest

The hardest part isn't the physical limitation. It's overriding the voice that translates rest as failure. For decades, worth was tied to productivity, to pushing through. Never the body choose. Rest felt like giving up.

Rest is different now. It's an active choice, not defeat. When I choose rest I'm recalibrating.

On the days I don't hike, there's purpose in that choice. Giving permission to be present with what's real, not what I wish it could be.

That's not easy.
